Yesterday I watched a show about honouring your promise, be it to a family, a friend and even to a stranger.
It is a show that radiates warmth and love, a show about promises fulfilled, family ties and friendship between unlikely worlds.
The show's called "Charlotte's Web".
Adapted from the paperback book titled "Charlotte's Web" by American author E.B. (Elwyn Brooks) White written in 1952, and illustrated by Garth Williams. It is the second version to be translated onto the big screen (the first being a 1973 musical-animation directed by Charles A. Nichols & Iwao Takamoto, produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions and Sagittarius Production). The current 2006 version is a live-action/computer-animated full feature based on the original novel itself. Directed by Gary Winick, the film consist of a strong cast such as Dakota Fanning as Fern, Dominic Scott Kay as Wilbur, Julia Roberts as Charlotte, Oprah Winfrey as Gussy the Goose and Steve Buscemi as Templeton the Rat; Music is cleverly and magically woven by Danny Elfman.
The movie is on the whole applaudable. Beautiful and heart-warming, esp. the last 30min and like the original book, skillfully captivating the audience in all manners of our emotions, from funny to serious to sad to happy to loving to exasperation. Amazing work! However, the beginning of the movie can be a little loud, well, tht's farm animals for you... All in all, it is a good family movie with a tale to tell and a lesson to learn from... so well... head down to the cinemas if you haven't for "Help is coming from above." -- Movie Slogan.
Quotable Quotes:
"We were born, we live... and when the time comes, we will die... Goodbye Wilbur." - Charlotte to Wilbur
"The Rat is swift, The Rat is nimble... The Rat should stop calling itself The Rat." - Templeton to himself
"I've made a promise, and a promise is something that I'll never break." - Charlotte to Wilbur
"Rats RULE!!!" - Templeton to the Crows
"Salutations." - Charlotte to Wilbur
"How about 'Pig Supreme'?" "No good, sounds too much like a rich dessert." - Samuel the Sheep suggesting to Charlotte
"It is not often that someone comes along who is a true friend and a good writer. And Charlotte was both." - Narrator
"What's your name?... That's a G-R-E-A-T name!" - Wilbur to all barn animals who introduced themselves
This a really good quote from the animated "Charlotte's Web" in 1973... Pity it isn't in the 2006 version though... :
Wilbur to Charlotte's Daughters - "Are you writers?"
Charlotte's Daughters - "No, but we will be when we grow up."
Wilbur - "Then write this in your webs, when you learn: Thjs hallowed doorway was once the home of Charlotte. She was brilliant, beautiful, and loyal to the end. Her memory will be treasured forever. "
Charlotte's Daughters - "Ooh, that will take us a lifetime."
Wilbur - "A lifetime. That's what we have."
Ohh well, I made a promise that I'll wait... wait as long as this heart continues to flutter and sing and leap whenever you're around, wait as long as my promise is abound. And for that promise i'll keep and hold dear... till the heart sings its last, till the hope withers and die and fade... till then... I believe.
