Went to watch Happy Birthday, played by Rene Liu (小米) and Louis Khoo (小南).
Lovely and tragic, beautiful yet plain... it's a romantic depiction of two people, seemingly separated only by the lack of a definite status for each other, slowly realizing that this "lack" tumbles and signifies and finally causes them to lose many things important to themselves, including each other.
It is a sad movie, and very true to life, in its portrayal of the "there/not there" kind of relationship. Although I would agree that the chemistry between the actors is really convincing and touching, I dare safely say that Rene Liu practically stole the show with her "to the point" portrayal of a girl with low confidence, convinced that she is plain average despite her unique gift with the piano keys and the ability to truly capture our male lead's heart. Still, it takes 2 hands to clap and Louis Khoo nearly matches her performance with his dazzling on-screen charm.
Other minor roles in this film is skillfully chosen and the storyline is well-adapted (from a short story, “我要跟你走”, written by none other than the female lead, Rene Liu herself). With its well planned and executed cinematography, this beautiful film is a worthy opponent to be put up against the renowed Korean Romantic Epics. Do catch it if you can, and you'll be surprised how much this film makes you ponder about your current life and decisions.
Funny, this year's gonna be a year crammed up with 21st birthday celebrations and i'm seriously not looking forward to them... feeling very tired liao.. Haiz... anyway... More and more stuff piling up liao... >.< Shoots... gonna need to work faster le... Wish me luck!
